Trouble is, the National Divorce would run down the middle of most states. The Central Valley of California, where my wife is from, is much more conservative than the college town in the Southeast near where I grew up.

It would be Statewide deal, as the legislatures and governors of each State decide to secede from the U.S. and form a new nation. Some will object that there will be citizens of the new nation who would rather not be part of it. Well, there are lots of citizens of the U.S. who don't want to be part of what it has become. You can't please everyone, but a national divorce would please a lot more people than the current arrangement.

Indeed. I just shudder to think of what my farming in-laws in the Central Valley, who help produce a great proportion of our nation's fruits and vegetables, would suffer under an independent California. Unfortunately the conditions of the Central Valley cannot be replicated in Kansas or Oklahoma.
